5 Things You Should Know When Building Your Brand

Whether you’re currently building your brand or you’re wondering how to get started, I understand that it can seem overwhelming. Your brand is one of your most valuable assets, and you want to get it right.

Your brand identity is the face of your business – it embodies your promises, consumers’ expectations, and a level of trust on which you will build your brand’s reputation.

Let’s break down a few of the tasks involved with building your brand:

  1. Establish your USP. What problem will you solve? If other brands are solving the same problem, how will you do it differently…and better? What makes your brand uniquely able to deliver on your promises? What are your values, and how will they affect your dealings with your ideal clients? Building a brand requires knowing why you’re different and how your clients will benefit from that distinction.
  2. Name your brand.  A great brand name is simplistic, easily searchable on the web, memorable, unique, relevant to your industry, and complementary to your USP.
  3. Write a tagline. Your tagline is a positioning statement that accompanies and supports your brand name. Nike’s “Just Do It” is an example of a tagline (or strapline). A great tagline is memorable, embodies the essence of your brand, states your brand’s promise, and is, ultimately, your mission statement in a concise package.
  4. Design your logo. A logo is a visual representation of your brand – and will come to carry with it all the memories, impressions, and emotions that consumers associate with your brand. Visual elements like colours, shapes, and lines contribute to the messages sent by your logo design, and should be chosen wisely.
  5. Establish a Branded Language. All of your brand’s communications should adhere to a voice – a tone – that has been established with your brand’s values and mission in mind. No matter if the communication is written or spoken, or if it is directed toward prospects, clients, employees, or affiliates, the tone and word choice should be unique to your brand.

As a brand enthusiast, well addict really, I know that building your brand is a multifaceted endeavour that is equally challenging and rewarding. The 5 steps highlighted here are just the beginning. Enjoy the journey!
